How light and color affect mood, productivity and sleep

It’s why does it feel so good to look at the blue sky. The answer involves light receptors that you may never have heard of, mood centers in the brain, and your body’s own opioids being produced in the skin. We’ve all heard that light hits rods and cones in the eyes and generates images. But light also hits receptors in the eyes called melanopsins that don’t have anything to do with vision. SkyView’s daytime spectrum uses skyblue wavelengths to reach the eyes and activate these receptors. This light directly impacts a brain mood-regulating center. This effect can also be amplified with violet light.

Sky-blue light activates skin receptors, triggering beta-endorphin. This opioid reduces pain and increases pleasure. This is also true for ultraviolet. Exposure to sunlight can cause beta-endorphin production, which could lead to dependence and tolerance. If you’ve ever craved a tanning bed or a beach vacation, now you may be able to explain why. There’s a major productivity benefit to the daytime wavelengths in the SkyView lamp. Both the blue and violet light of the SkyView lamp in the morning and the afternoon help us to be alert, focused, and perform better. A study showed that students were more able focus and had faster processing speed when exposed to light with blue wavelengths. The students scored higher in measures of alertness as well as mood, evening fatigue and irritability.

You might prefer to see the sun instead. Great choice, but don’t forget to stop before your skin is damaged, covering up before your skin becomes hot, sensitive, itchy, or red. Use a light mineral sunscreen with rosehip oil to protect your skin and backs.

However, the sun’s setting time is the best time to transition from activity into rest.
